There are stiffer restrictions.
Fred Lambert. It was a long time coming, but when CEO Elon Musk put an actual date on the release , we knew it was around the corner and Tesla stuck to it. It may do the wrong thing at the worst time, so you must always keep your hands on the wheel and pay extra attention on the road. Do not become complacent. When Full Self-Driving is enabled your vehicle will make lane changes off highway, select forks to follow your navigation route, navigate around other vehicles and objects, and make left and right turns.
Use Full Self-Driving in limited BEta only if you will pay constant attention to the road, and be prepared to act immediately, especially around blind corners, crossing intersections, and in narrow driving situations. Tesla wrote in the notes about the new driving visualization as it applies to Model S and Model X, which are equipped with an instrument cluster screen:. When Full Self-Driving is engaged, the instrument panel will display an expanded visualization to show additional surrounding information.
The apps on the left and right side of the instrument panel will be temporarily dismissed and the driving speed, Autopilot availability, Autopilot set speed, and detected speed limit will move to the bottom of the instrument panel. However, the actual rendering of the visualizations have also improved for all vehicles, including Model 3 and Model Y. Based on the latest information released by Tesla, the program consists of about 2, Tesla owners and the majority are Tesla employees.
Some of them are already posting videos of their first drives with the new version of the software. The driving visualization looks like a massive improvement.

Subscriber Account active since. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been promising for years now that fully autonomous vehicles are just over the horizon. But his company’s Full Self-Driving technology still doesn’t live up to its name. And despite Musk’s goal to eventually make the system safer than a human driver, it currently fails at things any human driver wouldn’t think twice about. For example, one Tesla owner posted a clip to Twitter on Thursday that showed his vehicle mistaking the moon for a traffic light over and over again as he cruised down the highway.
The clip shows a moon that’s unusually yellow and low in the sky, so one can see why the car might register it as a yellow light and apply the brakes. Another owner replied with their own video showing the same scenario. Still, the moon is a constant — not an extreme case — and it’s something any self-driving system worth its salt should identify as being hundreds of thousands of miles away, not just up ahead.
Plus, having a car slow down unexpectedly at highway speeds could create a dangerous situation for the driver and surrounding traffic. To be fair, Tesla doesn’t claim that Full Self-Driving can perfectly react to traffic lights and stop signs yet. The „Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control“ feature, released via a software update in early , is still in beta, and owners have to switch it on manually.
But it’s not just the moon that’s fooling Teslas.

Fred Lambert. Tesla is being a little more cautious about its Full Self-Driving timeline with regulators than with the public, according to a newly released memo from a meeting between Tesla and the California DMV. Earlier this year, Plainsite, a website that focuses on making legal documents public through freedom of information requests, but whose founder is also a known Tesla detractor who is suing Elon Musk, released emails between the California DMV and Tesla that went viral in the media.
The ratio of driver interaction would need to be in the magnitude of 1 or 2 million miles per driver interaction to move into higher levels of automation. Tesla indicated that Elon is extrapolating on the rates of improvement when speaking about L5 capabilities. View this document on Scribd. I feel like it is very similar to the last communications between Tesla and the DMV that were released by Plainsite.
What I found most interesting about the memo is that Tesla appears to have a goal of 1 or 2 million miles per driver interaction before moving into higher levels of automation. We designed and engineered our Full Self-Driving FSD Computer from the ground up to rapidly process neural networks — the foundation for how we train and develop Autopilot. While no Tesla cars are fully autonomous today and require active driver supervision, the FSD Computer is capable of delivering intelligent performance and control to enable a new level of safety and autonomy, without impacting cost or range. However, with the FSD Computer you will have access to an enhanced Driving Visualization that offers more insight into how your Tesla perceives the world around you and future Full Self-Driving Capabilities, pending regulatory approval.
Note that the enhanced Driving Visualization requires the latest Infotainment system. Tesla cars with Full Self-Driving Capability and Autopilot Computer 2. Fred Lambert. Tesla has recently started to move away from its radar sensor, which is useful to detect depth, and it is instead relying only on camera-based computer vision. This is a very different approach from the rest of the industry that not only uses radar but also lidar sensors as well. Tesla CEO Elon Musk maintains that cameras and neural nets are the keys to achieving self-driving. The whole road system is designed to work with optical imagers eyes and neural nets brain.
One of the problems with the lack of radar is that it complicates depth perception, which radar is great at, but Tesla plans to detect depth with a point-cloud view generated by its cameras and neural nets. Green noted that this neural net only runs with the main front-facing camera, which is one out of three front-facing cameras and one out of eight total cameras. This neural net should soon reach more Tesla vehicles as the automaker is expected to expand its FSD Beta rollout to more vehicles with the release of its FSD Beta v9 software update.

In the wee hours of the morning, Tesla CEO Elon Musk replied a few times on Twitter confirming that Full Self-Driving Beta Version 9 is set to start rolling out this weekend. He clarified that it will start happening this Saturday, not Saturday in two weeks. Tesla fans and owners have been waiting months for the major full self-driving update to come to cars via over-the-air-software updates.
And, interestingly, though they’ve been asking Musk constantly when the features might launch, they’ve been seemingly patient. This is likely due in part to the fact that Tesla removed the radar from its Model 3 and Model Y in favor of a camera-based vision-only approach, which reportedly slowed things down. As you can see from the tweet reply above, Musk said Beta 9 will begin uploading at „midnight California time on Friday.
We’ve noticed that most of Musk’s critical tweets these days come as replies rather than just tweets. Of course, as soon as he sends the reply, thousands of people begin to engage and ask questions. Musk rarely replies to most of the questions, though it seems he picks and chooses a few to respond to, which brings even more attention. Whole Mars Catalog asked for clarification in the tweet reply below.
Musk sort of clarified, or perhaps not. Rather than answering which week, he just wrote „Saturday. While this news from Musk is very exciting. The real news will be whether or not the updated version truly provides incredible improvement over the current version.

By Tiernan Ray July 19, — GMT PDT Topic: Artificial Intelligence. Tesla has started offering a subscription add-on for its automobiles for so-called self-driving features, though the language is a little confusing. The subscription offering simply means the plan can now be more widely accessible to drivers. The term is confusing, as the car using Tesla’s software is not in complete control, suggesting that the ‚full‘ in „full self-driving“ is a misnomer.
The term clashes with the language officially used in the language most people use to talk about autonomous driving, „advanced driver-assistance system,“ or ADAS. As Tesla describes the service , full self-driving is when the car can „assist“ in changing lanes; can help you to be a parallel or perpendicular park; will move from a „tight space“ with just the click of the key fob or a tap of the app, or will automatically navigate a parking garage to you with a tap of the app.
There are a few additional features in beta, such as navigating on a highway or automatically slowing your car in response to traffic signals. One more feature, where the car automatically navigates city streets, is expected to be offered at some point in future. This is confusing because none of this is that the human driver is still mostly in control.
As the language on Tesla’s site explains:. Full autonomy will depend on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers, as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience and regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions. As Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capabilities evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates. The ADAS designations used in industry, while being merely convention, tend to save terms of „full“ for levels of steering a vehicle where a person is not doing anything and where a person may not be present at all in the vehicle.

This Tesla feature isn’t quite what the name suggests, nor is it quite at the price the company promised. Perhaps the most overly optimistic technology in all of the auto industry is Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package. No car for sale to the general public can do what that name says. Here’s what it really does and how to get it on your Tesla. While the term „full self-driving“ leaves little ambiguity about its ambition, the technology accomplishes far less than the words.
As of this writing in July, , FSD is actually a sophisticated version of Level 2 driver assistance, as defined by SAE International, arbiter of many of the world’s automotive standards. The levels of driver assistance and autonomy. Level 2 is about as far you can go so far, and that certainly doesn’t deserve the moniker „full self-driving. Level 2 driver assistance requires the presence of two or more driver assistance technologies working simultaneously and, critically, as driver supports, not as substitutes for driver attention or operation.
In the case of Tesla’s FSD, as well as systems like GM’s SuperCruise, this means:.
